Aistear

Primary

Aistear is the new curriculum framework for all children from birth to six years across the range of early childhood settings in Ireland. It provides information to help practitioners, including infant teachers and Early Start teachers, to plan for and provide enjoyable and appropriately challenging learning experiences that will allow all children grow and develop as competent and confident learners. Aistear describes the types of learning experiences that are important for children in early childhood, and offers lots of practical ideas and suggestions. Examples of how this learning might be nurtured are also given. The programme is of interest to teachers of Junior Infants.

Guided Reading in the classroom -FULL

Primary

THIS COURSE IS NOW FULL

GUIDED READING IN THE CLASSROOM:

Guided Reading is a method of teaching reading to children. It is a preferred approach employed within primary, and some secondary, schools. Guided Reading sessions involve a teacher and a group of children. The session would have a set of objectives to be taught through the course of a roughly fifteen minute session. Whilst Guided Reading takes place with one group of children, the remaining children are engaged in independent or group literacy tasks. The idea is that the teacher is not interrupted by the other children in the class whilst focusing on one group. Guided Reading is usually a daily activity in a primary school classroom and involves every child in a class over the course of a week. Each Guided Reading group meets with the teacher several times throughout a given week. The children are usually grouped by reading levels, or strategic/skill-based needs.

This session will focus on the application of Guided Reading in daily practice.

·      Teaching strategies for reading : Modelled and Shared Reading, Guided Reading Independent Reading

  • Guided and independent strategies to support and extend student learning.

  • The Guided Reading process

  • Guided Reading within the Literacy Block

  • Guided Reading book levels

  • Benchmarking students running records

  • Using a running record effectively

  • Levels of Running Record analysis

  • Error analysis: Meaning Structure, Visual

  • Visible and invisible actions taken by the reader

  • High frequency words

·         Actions taken by the reader to build phrasing and fluency
